Bela Bodo was born in Budapest to a family of artists and his own talents were particularly encouraged by his father and grandfather. He studied under Istvan Csok and attended the Budapest Academy. Following World War II, Bodo struggled to escape communist controlled Hungary, making three separate escape attempts. Eventually, he was able to board a ship for New York, although he almost died during the crossing after falling overboard in the middle of a storm.
