Alfred Cornelius Howland was a New England painter known for his plein air landscapes and genre scenes. Born in Walpole, New Hampshire he graduated from the Walpole Academy before moving to Boston and then New York working as an engraver. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design and then moved to the Germany where he attended the Dusseldorf Academy. While abroad he developed several friendships with well-known artists including the Winslow Homer and Barbizon painters Jean Francois Millet, Camille Corot, and Theodore Rousseau. He returned to the United States in 1864, and became a teacher Cooper Union. His work is held in the permanent collections of Yale University, Smithsonian Institute, Milwaukee Art Center, High Museum of Atlanta, the Naval Academy, and Princeton Historical Society.

- punctured tear to the canvas to the lower lower right; areas of overpainting throughout; patch to the center; canvas strip-lined with tears along edges of original canvas; accretions and abrasions.
