Born in Brussels, Stella Mertens primarily lived and worked in Paris. Her work has been exhibited internationally in France, Denmark, and the United States, among other countries. She is known for her abstract and expressionistic figural paintings, still lifes, landscapes, and architectural scenes often featuring vibrant planes of color and symbolist elements. She showed her work at multiple museums and galleries, including the Musée Picasso in Antibes-Juan-les-Pins in 1962.

- ripple to paper; scattered cracks and flaked paint throughout; foxing to fabric mat; surface accretion; scratches and wear to frame; bow to verso backing board and frame cross-bar; verso backing paper removed, with gallery label re-affixed to backing board.
