Seller states this work was previously purchased from Weschler’s Auctioneers in April 16th, 2005.
Born in Augusta, Maine, Frank Bicknell studied art in Malden, Massachusetts, then later in Paris at the Académie Julian with Robert Fleury and William Bougureau. Known for his landscapes and harbor scenes, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design in New York and taught at the College of Fine Arts at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh for six years. After settling in Old Lyme, Connecticut, he was introduced to Woodrow Wilson and his wife who purchased some of his work. During his lifetime, he was a member of several artist associations, including the Salmagundi Club, the National Arts Club, the American Association of Paris, the Watercolor Society, and the Pittsburgh Art Association, among others.
