Raised in El Paso, Texas, Lawrence Benjamin Porter is known for his paintings of American Southwestern subjects, often featuring strong contrasts of light and shadow. He studied at New Mexico State where he received a Bachelor’s of Science, a Bachelor’s of Artts, and a Master’s of Fine Art. In 1972, he was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from the London Institute of Applied Sciences. He became a full-time professional artist in 1965 after teaching art at a public school and working as a Visual Information Specialist on the General’s Staff at the the White Sands Missile Range. One of Porter’s notable innovations was introducing nudes subjects in contemporary Southwestern scenes and landscapes, beginning in 1964. In 1995 he was elected to the Knickerbockers Artists of American, and was voted into the El Paso Artists’ Hall of Fame in 1997.
