Although Robert Goodnough moved within the circles of second-generation Abstract Expressionists, he was also known for dabbling in figuration. He was referred to as a painter “who eluded categories” by New York Times writer William Grimes, and managed to fly under the radar as an underrated artist. Goodnough studied art at Syracuse University, the Ozenfant School of Fine Arts, and Hans Hofmann’s summer school. He established friendships with several renowned Abstract Expressionists and modernists such as Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Clement Greenberg, and Meyer Shapiro. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous prestigious institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
