Victor Archipovich Ivanoff was a Russian-born South African artist, cartoonist and singer, and also son of a Russian Cossack general. A few years after the start of the October Socialist Revolution, Ivanoff and his family fled to Yugoslavia in 1920. It was here that he studied architecture at the University of Zagreb, but put his studies on hold when he joined the Don Cossack Choir. Ivanoff settled in South Africa after visiting the country on a choir tour. It was there was he worked as a political cartoonist for the Portuguese newspaper Noticias, before working for the Afrikaans newspaper in Johannesburg for 37 years. Some of his commissions include caricatures of members of parliament, and throughout his lifetime he produced more than 12,000 cartoons. After many years, Ivanoff returned to his studies, taking art lessons from Jacobus Hendrik (Henk) Pierneef (1886 – 1957) and traveling to Europe. His participated in several group exhibitions and was the featured artist for ten solo exhibitions in the Transvaal.
