August James Weber studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati under Frank Duveneck, Lewis Henry Meakin, and Herman Henry Wessel. He began painting in a traditional European style, but later explored Post-Impressionist and Fauvist techniques in his landscapes. Weber was associated with a group of artists referred to as the Valley of the Moon Society Painters, and in 1926 was considered the ‘Guiding Genius’ of this group. During his lifetime, he exhibited at a number of reputable institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Corcoran Art Gallery, among others.
