Reproduction Christopher Dresser Modern Silver Plate Teapot, 20th Century
Item Details
The sleek form of this teapot at first appears to be embedded in 1930s Modernism, but was in fact designed in 1879.
British designer and design theorist Dr. Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) was a key figure in the Modern English (or Anglo-Japanese) style, and has been referred to as the ‘father of industrial design’, designing utilitarian objects in unadorned geometric and rectilinear forms. He created eighty designs for the Sheffield silver firm James Dixon & Sons, however only six were manufactured, many believing that his designs were ahead of their time, particularly with the returning popularity of the Queen Anne style.
These were reproduced by Italian design firm Alessi, however no discernible maker’s mark or attribution could be made on this example.
