US Navy Officer's Bicorn Hat and Epauletts 1898

A US Navy officer’s bicorn hat and epauletts dated 1898, showing rank of Lt. Commander, which belonged to Rear Admiral. V. Daniel Stuart during his Navy career. This fantastic set includes a Fore and Aft cocked bicorn hat made of beaver with gold bullion accouterments. Stuart was promoted to Lt. Commander two days after the start of the Spanish-American War (4-25-1898) and given command of the USS Mangrove, thus this bicorn hat and epauletts would have been part of his wartime uniform. The buttons are gilt brass. Epauletts are made of the finest French spun gold and silver bullion. The storage case is of painted metal with interior frame by WM.H. Hortsmann Company, Philadelphia. Painted on top of the storage case are the initials VDS. Scratched to the bottom of the case is written “ARM Pearl”. Interior is marked “1898”.
Documented service of Lt. Commander V. Daniel Stuart: Midshipman 9-24-1863, Graduated Annapolis 1869, Ensign 7-12-1870, Master 2-11-1873, Lieutenant 9-9-1876, Lt. Commander 4-27-1898, Rear Admiral 9-06-1909. A veteran of three wars; during the Civil War he was a midshipman aboard the USS Macedonian while that ship was chasing the famous Confederate Warship CSS Alabama. During the Spanish-American War, he commanded the USS Mangrove. Not having received notice of the armistice, he captured two Spanish gunboats the day after peace was declared. In the Philippines, he commanded the Isla de Luzon, the Don Juan de Austria and the Yorktown. Medals were awarded him for the Civil War, the war with Spain and operations in the Philippines. Rear Admiral Stuart, Ret died 4-14-1932 and is interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Section East, Site 963. He was a Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States and of the Military Order of the World War. This is an amazing piece of US Naval history.
