From the series 53 Stations of the Tokaiko
A woodblock on paper titled Seki from the series 53 Stations of the Tokaiko by Jun’ichiro Sekino (Japan; 1914-1988), dated 1969. This piece depicts a scattering of lotus flower floating on a sea of lily pads rendered in a rich, blue-green gradient. Above, glazed roof tiles create an undulating pattern contrasted against a dark wood grain. The artist’s signature and stamp are present to the lower right corner of the print. This piece is presented matted under glass in a wooden frame with faux marble patterning.
Born in the Aomori prefecture, Jun’ichiro Sekino was a painter, graphic designer and printmaker. From an early age, Sekino began creating his own woodblock prints before studying etching with the artist, Junzo Kon. He continued his artistic studies at the Etching Institute of Takeo Nishida, adding oil painting and drawing to his technical abilities. As he developed his style, Sekino became stylistically and technically diverse. He drew influences from both Western and Japanese printing techniques and transitioned his subjects easily from figurative to abstract art. Sekino began exhibiting his work after World War II, earning him worldwide recognition and eventually assumed a position at Kobe University. His work is held by private and public collections including the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
