An oil painting on board titled Figures on the Beach by Juan Bautista Porcar Ripollés (Spain; 1888- 1974), circa 1950. This piece depicts three figures on the beach in front of a harbor with three large ships anchored out on the water. The artist’s signature is present to the lower left corner of the painting and the piece is presented in a gold-toned wooden frame.

Born to Spanish farmers, Juan Bautista Porcar Ripollés worked his family’s land until the age of seventeen while consistently practicing art in his spare time. In 1906, he began studying sculpture on scholarship at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos de Valencia. Gradually Ripollés shifted his focus from sculpture to oil painting, finding he could emulate the modern style that he had witnessed while living in Barcelona. He evenutally formed the group Ribalta, which focused on the natural painting of landscapes. Ripollés began exhibiting in 1927 in Barcelona and eventually started to exhibit worldwide. His work is featured in many public and private collections.
