Alexandre Hogue was a painter, printmaker, and muralist associated with the Dallas Nine. Recognized for both his realist and abstract work, he was especially known for his Dust Bowl series and his depictions of Native Americans in New Mexico. Hogue studied at the College of Art and Design in Minneapolis under Texan artist Frank Reaugh. After moving to Texas, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the Dallas Times-Herald, and also taught at the Texas State College for Women. Hogue continued his teaching career and was the head of the art department at the University of Tulsa from 1945 to 1963. In his honor, the University founded the Alexander Hogue Gallery after his retirement. Hogue’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Centre Pompidou in Paris; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Art Museum of South Texas, among others.
