An early 19th century oil painting on board titled Ely Cathedral by English landscape painter Peter de Wint. This work features the Anglican Gothic cathedral located in the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, created around the time or shortly before the cathedral was undergoing restoration. Titled and signed to the verso, the work is presented a Louis XIV style gesso frame.

English landscape painter Peter de Wint apprenticed under portraitist and engraver John Raphael Smith. In 1806, he visited Lincoln with artist William Hilton, R.A., and ended up studying under John Varley. In 1809, de Wint began studying at the Royal Academy and was elected an Associate of the Old Water Colour Society a year later. In addition to the Royal Academy, he exhibited at the Gallery of Associated Artists in Watercolours and the Society of Painters in Watercolours. His work has been collected by multiple institutions including the National Gallery; the Victoria & Albert Museum; and The Collection, Lincoln, among others.

Condition

- areas of craquelure to the center and lower right edge; cracks to the paint to the trees to the right and center and above the left tower; minor spot of over painting to the lower left corner; painting examined under black light; irregularities throughout surface of painting particularly to areas of pooled varnish; cracks and chips throughout molding of frame with some loss; discoloration, marks, nicks, and abrasions throughout frame.
