An oil painting on canvas board by well-listed American painter Andrew Thomas Schwartz (New York; 1867 – 1942), created during the first half of the 20th century. Schwartz was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and showed an aptitude for art-making in his early education. In 1890, he began rigorous artistic training at the Cincinnati Art Academy under the tutelage of the formidable Frank Duveneck. Later, he traveled to New York where he studied with H. Siddons Mowbray at the Art Students League, and was awarded the Lazarus Scholarship for mural painting to study abroad. Schwartz remained overseas for three years, studying painting in Italy, France, Germany and England.
Schwartz was an avid member of numerous art clubs and societies, including the National Society of Mural Painters, the Salmagundi Club, the Architectural League of New York, Allied Artists of America, American Watercolor Society, the Circolo Artistico of Rome, and the Union International Des Beaux Arts et Des Lettres of Paris.
