A late 19th or early 20th century Tibetan thangka of Hayagriva, one of the dharmapāla, the wrathful defenders of the dharma. He is depicted with red skin, with two additional heads – one green and the other white, each with a ferocious visage. His six arms hold various attributes including a trisula trident, and others. He steps with his eight feet in a military pose upon nāga snakes. Adorned with snake ornaments, he is surrounded by a flaming aureole. The central figure is placed within an imagined landscape and surrounded by several smaller figures including three lamas in the upper register. Unsigned.
