A first book edition, early impression/issue copy of Charles Dickens’ The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, also known as The Pickwick Papers, the first novel he published under his own name rather than the pen name ‘Boz’. Bound in a three quarter red leather with marbled boards, and illustrated with 43 plates by Seymour & Phiz, plus additional illustrations by R.W. Buss including the rare ‘suppressed’ plates at p. 69 and 74. Features the following early issue points: the sign above the door in the title page engraving reads ‘Veller’ (this is a first issue point), footnote present to p. 9, p. 25 signature ‘E’, p. 43 Chapter V paragraph 2 ‘ruined wall’, p. 261 signature ‘X2’, p. 342 line 5 ‘S. Veller’ instead of ‘Weller’, p. 375 headline misspelling ‘Picwkick’, p. 400 line 21 ‘this friends’ for ‘his friends’, p. 432 headline imperfect ‘F’.
